Dr. Saadia Virk Rizvi(Introduction as CEO & Chairperson Board of Directors)

Dr. Saadia Virk is a graduate of Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore. After completing her postgraduate training at the Aga Khan University she went for further training to UK and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. In the UK she worked in institutions of excellence and obtained special training in general Gynaecology, Urogynaecolgoy, Oncology, Assisted Reproduction and high risk Obstetrics.
On return to Pakistan, with her leadership skills, she established departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Mid East Hospital and a centre of Assisted Reproduction at Australian Concept Infertility Centre in Karachi.
In 2008 she took the lead in establishing and inaugurating South City Hospital which is a state-of-the-art facility for surgical specialties. At present she is the Chief Executive Officer and the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of this Hospital.
Clinical work is her second area of excellence. Her expertise lies in management of high risk pregnancies, infertility, assisted reproduction, oncology and laparoscopic surgery including LAVH, ovarian cystectomies, myomectomies, ectopics and endometriosis. She is also well versed with conventional general gynaecology. In recognition of her clinical work and leadership skills she has recently been awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
Under Dr. Saadia Virk’s supervision, South City Hospital is now an established and recognized centre for laparoscopic surgeries in gynaecology and general surgery.

Prof. Muhammad Umar M.D (Director)
Prof. Muhammad Umar graduated from King Edward Medical College Lahore in 1968. He completed his orthopaedic training at Albert Einstein College of medicine in New York. He received fellowship training in joint replacement surgery at Hospital for special surgery, University of Cornell, New York. He was appointed consultant at University of Rochester affiliated hospital in 1975. He established a four-man orthopaedic group practice as a senior partner. As a member of the clinical faculty at the University of Rochester, he took active part in undergraduate education and postgraduate orthopaedic training. In 1990 he came back to Pakistan and joined Aga Khan University Hospital (Karachi) as a full time academic faculty member. Here he pioneered the development of arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement work. He is the founding faculty member of orthopaedic residency training program at the Aga Khan University and its director from 1995-2000. he is also a founding member of Pakistan Society for surgery of the hand and has served as its general secretary and president from 1995 – 1998. He also had the honor to serve as secretary general and president of Pakistan Orthopaedic Association from 1996 – 1999. Prof. Muhammad Umar M.D. is the founder and surgeon-in-chief of Institute of Orthopaedics and Surgery and head of orthopaedic service of South City Hospital. He is recognized for his expertise in total joint replacement and revision surgery.
Prof. Javaid Haider Rizvi (Director)
Prof. Rizvi is a graduate from Dow Medical College Karachi. After postgraduate training in the medical schools of Oxford, Cambridge and St. Mary’s Hospital, London he obtained the Fellowships of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the American College of Surgeons. He was the first Pakistani to hold a consultant Gynaecologist post in UK. Prof. Rizvi has had a distinguished academic and clinical career for which he has received national and international recognition. He has 64 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and has contributed 16 chapters in text books of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. During this time he has received many honors including the Academic Fellowship of the Common Wealth Universities, FIGO Professorship, visiting Professorships in the Universities of Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, East Africa, and UK. He has the singular honor of being a Teaching Fellow of the Imperial College of Science, Medicine and Technology. Recently he was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz by the President of Pakistan.
Prof. Rizvi has served as the founding Professor and Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Aga Khan University. His clinical expertise lies in Urogynaecology particularly fistulae surgery, Infertility and Assisted Reproduction, Gynaecological Oncology and general Gynaecology including reconstructive surgery.
At present he is the Medical Director of Australian Concept Infertility Centre, a Director and a Board member at the South City Hospital. He brings with him a wealth of clinical and administrative experience and continues to provide the services in which he excels. We are happy and proud to have him with us.
Surgeon Mumtaz Maher (Director)
As a pioneer laparoscopic surgeon in Pakistan, Dr. Mumtaz Maher performed the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 1991 and has made an indelible mark in the surgical field since then. Dr. Maher served as a Professor in Surgery at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre until 2007 and is credited with the introduction of specialty oriented clinics in the public sector hospital.
As a Chief of Surgery, South City Hospital, Dr. Maher introduced Bariatric (Obesity) Surgery and the first Obesity Clinic was launched in November 2008. Obesity surgery was initiated with gastric banding in June 2007, followed by laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies in May 2008. South City Hospital is one of the few centres in the country that offers complex pancreatic and biliary procedures such as pancreatico-duodenectomy (Whipple’s) and surgeries for cholangiocarcinoma.

Dr. Nadir Ali Syed (Director)
Dr. Nadir Ali Syed graduated with honors from the Agha Khan University Hospital (AKUH) MBBS program. He then proceeded to USA for clinical training in neurology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey. Here he was chosen as the chief resident for one of USA’s finest neurology programs. He further undertook a two year sub specialization fellowship in clinical neurophysiology to gain special skills in complicated neurologic test at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. NIH is recognized as the world’s largest biomedical research organization. Subsequently, Dr. Syed returned to Pakistan to join the faculty of neurology at AKUH in 1998. He has been engaged with problem based learning since and has chaired the neurosciences module committee that developed the neurosciences curriculum. He was appointed as Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) for the university. Under his leadership as chief of neurology, the AKUH’s neurology section grew to be the largest department in the country. He is currently a part time faculty member of the AKU in the faculty of health Sciences and works as a clinical neurologist at SCH. He has over 25 international research publications and has received several departmental research awards. He has also earned several educational citations and awards. Dr. Syed is a diplomat of American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (Neurology), American Board of Electrodiagnostic medicine and American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (Clinical Neurophysiology).
Dr. Faisal Haq (Director)
Dr Faisal Haq, founder member of South City Hospital, graduated from Sind Medical College after which he completed Diploma in Internal Medicine and M.Sc from Royal Postgraduate Medical School, University of London. Dr Faisal later completed Diploma In Dermatology from Cardiff University, U.K and obtained Aesthetic certification in Lasers, Botox, Fillers, from the prestigious National Laser Institute, Scottsdale, Arizona. He practices Dermatology at South City Hospital.
He realized that hospital administration is a dynamic field hence went on to do M.B.A in health and hospital management from Institute of Business Management, Karachi. He has received formal training in financial management of health services, regulatory affairs in health care, health management information systems and quality assurance. Dr Faisal is also a teaching faculty for the Executive M.B.A at the Institute of Business Administration, Karachi.
Dr Faisal was the C.E.O of the original South City Hospital and has acted as the agent of change in its transformation into the present setup. He was the first C.E.O of South City Hospital (Pvt) Ltd and was responsible for arranging finance, approval of construction plans, operation management, information system development etc.
Dr Faisal is also the Chairman of Al-Malik Charitable trust which is a philanthropic organization providing educational and health services to the children.
Dr. Razi Mohammad Yousuf (Director)
Dr. Razi completed his MBBS from Dow Medical College and Civil Hospital, Karachi in 1995. He then proceeded for a Masters in Hospital Management from the Nuffield Institute of Health, University of Leeds, UK. After post-graduation he worked at various managerial positions in Quality Management and Human Resource Management at Dewsbury & District Hospital and Yorkshire Denary where he was responsible for shaping of organizational professional development programs. He then came back to Pakistan and joined the Aga Khan University Hospital. Here he introduced and implemented the clinical audit program and risk management program for the first time at the institution and facilitated clinicians to build integrated clinical care pathways for high risk, high volume and high cost cases. Then in 2002, he went to London and joined the St. George’s Healthcare trust as Senior Manager Clinical Audit. In 2003, he became Senior Managerial positions in Clinical Service/Quality at Changi General Hospital, Singapore. Here he developed and implemented the SARS surveillance and audit tool which was highly appreciated by the Ministry of Health (Singapore). During this period he started doing International Consultancy for Organization for the Joint Commission International Accreditation. Dr. Razi has facilitated around 15 International Hospital/Organizations to be accredited by Joint Commission International in Asia Pacific, Middle East and South Asia Regions. In 2006, he became Corporate Director for Quality & Performance at National Guard Health Affairs, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dr. Razi is trained Quality/System Auditor and he received his training from Chicago (JCIA) and in Patient Safety at Harvard University, Cambridge USA. He then came back to Pakistan to join South City Hospital in 2008 as Chief Executive Officer. He hold the CEO position for one year but due to his busy International Consultancy commitment he step-down and now working as Executive Director, Administrative Affairs.
