South City Hospital Medical Director Dr. Munir joined us in November 2012 and has over two decades of experience in the Critical Care Specialty. His most recent appointment was as Assistant Medical Director, Clinical Risk Manager, and In-charge of the ICU and CCU at the Umm Al Qura Holy Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
He joined the Intensive Care Department at the Orthopaedic & Medical Institute, Karachi, in 1992 and left for Umm Al Qura Holy Makkah after a decade. Before that, as a trainee at the Dow University Of Health Sciences, he established the first High Dependency Unit in any surgical unit at a public sector hospital. He has participated in the establishment of the first Cardiac Surgery Unit at the provincial level (when the National Institute of Cardiovascular Disease was the only cardiac tertiary care hospital in Sindh).
His dedicated contribution to health care continued in Makkah, where millions of pilgrims visit every year for the Hajj. He is certified by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, California.
He participated in the Makkah Region Quality Plan which was accredited by the Joint Commission International, the global authority on healthcare quality management. Guidelines were promulgated to cater to local needs and meet international standards to thwart and handle health risks such as Swine Flu or the H1N1 Virus, especially in the context of a large number of pilgrims. This work ranged from patient safety from medical errors to disaster management and factored in diverse situations such as in-hospital narcotics control and organ donation and transplants.
Dr. Munir has supervised several key changes to SCH since he joined. Here are a few particular notes:
Infrastructure: In our Emergency Department, the Puritan Bennett Ventilator was installed to support Critical Care Services, and make sure serious patients receive the requisite high degree of critical support from the time of admission. We also now have dedicated stroke services.
We have, in 2023, a 12-Bed Medical Intensive Care Unit, a Ten-Bed High Dependency Unit, and a Four Point Hemodialysis Facility. To Provide Advanced life support and Critical Care with the latest Ventilators, BiPAP devices, Invasive Monitoring, and Advanced Support system of Therapeutic and Diagnostics likely VIR, TACE, PCI, and NVI having experienced, highly skilled Consultants and staff.
We have a fully equipped 8-Bed Surgical Intensive Care unit. Our NICU or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit caters to three ventilated neonates in incubators.
South City Hospital has the following plans as well, for the larger benefit of our esteemed community at large:
22-Bed ER
First Advanced Stroke Services Of Pakistan
Well-Equipped Rehabilitation Unit
Chemotherapy.
Care levels: Our nurse-patient ratio was brought down to 1:1 and qualified skilled and experienced Medical Officers 1:2.6. We also transition the patient to the room from a critical care unit with the same nursing staff who attended to them. This service not only hastens the reunion of the patient and family but also plays a vital role in infection control and prevention of cross-infection. It also lessens the financial burden of ICU expenses on the patients and prepares the family for long-term home medical care.
Response times: In emergencies, within five minutes the following staff will arrive in the ER: a registrar from the Coronary Care Unit, a registrar from the Medical Intensive Care Unit, and when a Code Blue or Green is announced through our central paging system, an Anesthetist along with his/her team of trained Critical Care Technicians and Registered Nurses. The on-call critical care consultants then attend to their critical care admission units.
For heart patients: We have in 2018 an 18-Bed Medical Intensive Care Unit, a Ten-Bed High Dependency Unit, and a Four Point Hemodialysis Facility. South City Hospital has the following plans as well, for the larger benefit of our esteemed community at large: 1- 22-Bed ER 2- First advanced Stroke Services Of Pakistan 3- Well Equipped Rehabilitation Unit 4- Chemotherapy.
Care at home: We are working on a pilot for our Home Health Care Service and it will soon be rolled out to patients residing in a 7km vicinity. We hope to increase it to 12kms in two years.
Respiratory therapists: SCH is the first private healthcare facility in Pakistan to accept and provide jobs to newly graduated Respiratory Therapists. We have eight dedicated RTs working with our critical care units.
