Dr. Mahnaz Naveed Shah, MD, is the Director, Consultant Ophthalmologist, and Glaucoma specialist at The Eye Centre, Dr. Mahnaz Naveed Shah & Associates at the South City Hospital, Karachi.
Dr. Mahnaz completed both her basic medical as well as her advanced postgraduate training in the United States. She graduated from medical college in the United States, earning a medical doctorate from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and continued to complete her training in ophthalmology at the world-famous Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine. She has trained in both adult and pediatric ophthalmology at The Methodist Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Centre, Ben Taub Hospital, and Texas Children’s Hospital. After her training she was honored with the Stephen Schindler Award by the Cullen Eye Institute, a recognition awarded annually to one outstanding graduating resident.
After completing her extensive ophthalmology training, Dr. Mahnaz completed an additional fellowship in Glaucoma and Anterior Segment Surgery in the United States. She was board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology after completion of her training and recertified again through a rigorous process in 2012 to ensure compliance with the highest standards in the provision of eye care. Dr. Mahnaz Naveed Shah is also an elected fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Ophthalmology. She maintains an unrestricted active medical license and board certification to practice ophthalmology in the United States.
After completing of training and working as a qualified ophthalmologist in the United States, Dr. Mahnaz returned to Pakistan in 2002, when she joined the Aga Khan University Hospital as part of the medical student faculty and as a Consultant Eye Surgeon.
In 2011, she established The Eye Centre at South City Hospital, which has now grown to a full-service Ophthalmology Unit that provides world-class services of six dedicated ophthalmologists delivering a range of sub-specialty interests including, glaucoma, anterior segment surgery, refractive surgery, vitreo-retina, strabismus, pediatric ophthalmology, and oculoplastics. The Eye Centre has a fully staffed, state of art operating suite and dedicated eye day care surgery intake area providing surgical eye care at South City Hospital.
Dr. Mahnaz has very actively participated in teaching, has been involved in several research projects, and publications, and continues to participate widely in educational activities locally, nationally, and internationally. She has also been one of the founding members of The Pakistan Glaucoma Association. Her main clinical interest is in Pediatric and Adult medical and surgical glaucoma management in which she has extensive medical and surgical experience.
