Prof Nadeem Rizvi graduated from Dow Medical College in 1982. After completing his house job, he went abroad to the United Kingdom, obtaining his MRCP and later FRCP from the Royal College of Physicians UK. While in the UK, Prof Nadeem Rizvi worked for ten years as a pulmonologist, where he trained and gained expertise in bronchoscopy, bronchial and pleural biopsies, critical care medicine, and cardiothoracic medicine. He worked for the National Health Service in the United Kingdom in busy tertiary care hospitals, with a focus on Respiratory medicine and Critical care medicine. He received his CCT from the UK in internal and respiratory medicine and is on the specialist registrar in both specialties. He has a current license with the General Medical Council UK and has also worked on locums in the United Kingdom, from time to time. Prof Nadeem Rizvi is a member of the European Respiratory Society and the American Thoracic Society. He has been practicing in his pulmonology clinic at South City Hospital, Karachi, since 2016.
Prof Nadeem Rizvi has over 30 years of professional expertise in managing respiratory and general medical diseases. Before retiring in 2018, he served as the head of the Department of Chest Medicine at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) – a leading government hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. He is an expert on Asthma, COPD, Infectious chest diseases, Tuberculosis, and smoking-related respiratory diseases.
In his long career, he has made several notable contributions to the specialty of Pulmonology in Pakistan. As a member of the teaching faculty of Sindh Medical College, he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate doctors in respiratory medicine for over 14 years. Of the many aspiring doctors, he has trained, over 200 postgraduates, who have gone on to receive their diplomas in Chest Diseases, and Tuberculosis (DTCD) and have become Members of the College of Physicians & Surgeons (MCPS), 15 doctors have acquired fellowships in Pulmonology, and are now working as Pulmonologists at a leading hospital in Karachi as well as the rest of Sindh province, and 2 of his trainees have obtained the MD degree in Pulmonology.
For the first time in Pakistan, Prof Nadeem Rizvi pioneered noninvasive ventilation, chest ultrasound, pleuroscopy, and medical thoracoscopy. In 2016, he served as the interim dean of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and as the Secretary for the faculty of Chest Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, which developed and revised the curriculum for the membership and fellowship examinations in Pulmonology.
Prof Nadeem Rizvi has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals both nationally and internationally. He has presented his research papers at numerous conferences, both in Pakistan as well as abroad. He is on the review board of many journals. He has guest lectured in many international forums, including faculty lectures at Allegheny General Hospital in the United States.

Prof Rizvi has taken an active part in establishing and running the affairs of the Pakistan Chest Society. As the President of the Pakistan Chest Society National Chapter for two years, from 2010 to 2012, and as the President of the Pakistan Chest Society Sindh Chapter for four years, he helped organize several public awareness campaigns, which included TV talk shows, radio broadcasts, and promotional marches to build awareness of respiratory ailments like Asthma, smoking, and COPD among the general population. In addition, the society has its medical journal – which I helped establish – that is widely circulated amongst the chest physicians of Pakistan.
Prof Rizvi’s life’s work has been dedicated to the continued progress of Pulmonology within Pakistan. As an educator, he has taught and trained the next generation of doctors with the highest quality of professional training that can rival top institutions abroad.
