Dr Saad Bashir trained in Dow Medical College, Karachi, graduating in 1982.
After his house job he proceeded to the UK for training.
He obtained his FRCS in general surgery having worked in general surgery, ER, neurosurgery and spinal injuries in Newcstle and Sheffield.
He then entered higher neurosurgical training working in the Royal London Hospital, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He obtained his FRCS in neurosurgery and was certified by the Intercollegiate Board in Neurosurgery UK & Irel).
He was then appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee – an internationally renowned teaching hospital. He taught in the medical schools of the universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Dundee.
Later he returned to Pakistan and became Assoc Prof and Chief of Neurosurgery in Aga Khan Hospital, Karachi. He established the training programme in neurosurgery there and expanded the clinical services. He also acted as the Chair of the Hospital Tissue Committee, organized several international medical conferences and supervised doctors’ training and research.
He later moved to Ziauddin University as a professor of neurosurgery and also as a visiting professor in Dow University.
He was invited to become the Chief of Neurosurgery in the second largest military hospital in Saudi Arabia.
He revived the department there, establishing full comprehensive spinal surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, vascular neurosurgery and endoscopic neurosurgery, trauma surgery and minimally invasive neurosurgery.
In addition he initiated epilepsy surgery there, using the latest surgical techniques.
He also established neurosurgical training there and trained three doctors to consultant level.
His trainees are working as consultants Pakistan, UK and USA.
He has been active in clinical research throughout his career publishing papers in leading international peer reviewed medical journals.
He has been a faculty member of ECMT – European Continued Medical Training – teaching doctors in Europe over the past decade.
He has written articles for public education, appeared on TV and radio programmes and conducted public education meetings on neurosurgical topics.
In South City Hospital he provides a comprehensive neurosurgical service covering the brain and spine including pituitary, epilepsy and pediatric neurosurgery as well as trauma neurosurgery.
