Fine-Needle Aspiration: Taking Tissue Samples
A Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) is a procedure where fine tissue samples are taken for analysis from an area in the body using a fine needle. A Core Biopsy is a procedure where small core samples of tissue are taken for analysis from an area in the body. This procedure is performed by a radiologist (specialist doctor who performs and reports on the examination) using either CT or ultrasound guidance to take the tissue samples. A cytologist (specialist doctor who analyses the tissue sample) is often present as well to ensure that sufficient tissue sample is obtained for analysis.
What will happen during the procedure?
The radiologist will talk to you about the procedure that you are having and will explain any risks involved. The radiologist, with the help of a radiographer or sonographer (person who takes x-rays or performs the ultrasound scan), will use CT or ultrasound imaging guidance to assess the area and inject some local anaesthetic. The radiologist will then accurately guide a needle into the correct position to take several tissue samples that will be sent to pathology laboratory for interpretation.
Patient Preparation
- You are required to fast from food and fluid for 4 hours prior to your procedure.
- Required lab reports of PT, APTT & INR.
- If you take any blood thinners, you may need to stop taking these prior to your injection. All other medications can be taken as normal.
Pre-Procedure Instruction
- Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment time, for exam registration.
- Wear a two-piece outfit.
- On the day of your appointment, be sure to bring:
– Your doctor’s referral form.
– Your previous films and medical records.
- Before your procedure, please let the Radiologist know if you are, or think you may be pregnant.
- The procedure will usually take 30-45 minutes.
- Please leave valuable items in your vehicle or with a trusted person.
- Please inform us if you cannot keep the appointment.
- You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home the following day.

The tissue samples taken in your procedure will given to you and you will have to send it to pathology laboratory for analysis. The analysis of the samples will take approximately one week.
You will be monitored after the procedure to ensure there have not been any complications. You may be need to stay overnight for observation.
