Prof Dr Mumtaz Maher is one of the most distinguished and pioneering figures in Modern General Surgery in Pakistan. As Chief of Surgery and a member of the Board of Directors at South City Hospital, he has played a defining role in shaping the hospital into a centre of excellence for Advanced Surgical Care.

Recognized nationally for introducing and advancing Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery in Pakistan, Prof Dr Maher has led landmark surgical innovations, including the First Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the country. At South City Hospital, he established Bariatric (Obesity) Surgery as a specialized service line, making the institution one of the early adopters of metabolic and weight-loss surgery in Pakistan.

Under his leadership, South City Hospital has also developed advanced surgical capabilities in complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures, including pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple’s procedure) and surgeries for
cholangiocarcinoma – procedures performed in highly specialized surgical environments.

With decades of academic, surgical, and international experience in both the United Kingdom and Pakistan, Prof Dr Maher is regarded not only as an accomplished surgeon, but also as a mentor, educator, and institutional leader whose work has shaped generations of surgeons nationwide.
