Professional Career

As the Professor of Surgery at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Prof. Shahid has a keen interest in Advanced Laparoscopic procedures.

He has vast experience in field of Laparoscopic surgery, contributing to more than one hundred thousand Laparoscopic cholecystectomies, more than three thousand Laparoscopic hernia repairs and in excess of three hundred Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy’s.

He has contributed to a greater extent in field of perianal diseases and colorectal surgery and has performed close to twenty thousand procedures especially stapled hemorrhoidopexy.

Prof. Shahid received his schooling from Habib Public School, Karachi in 1981. After completing his Intermediate science examination from DJ Sindh Government Science College, Karachi in 1983, he completed his MBBS at Dow Medical College, Karachi in 1989.

The following year, he passed his USMLE Exam (MD). He joined Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) as Resident General Surgery. Six months later, he joined Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre as Registrar General Surgery.

Prof. Shahid acquired his FCPS General Surgery in 1996 and moved to UK to get his FRCS from the Royal College of Glasgow in 1996. He trained in different hospitals in the UK for the next two years. Upon his return to Pakistan in 1998, he was appointed Senior Registrar of Surgery at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Over the years, he has made significant surgical contributions to the diseases of the digestive tract, hepatobiliary, colorectal and hernia surgery respectively. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2005 and Associate Professor and in charge of the newly established Surgical Unit IV.

Working as an Associate Professor, he established a well-equipped surgical unit with a focus on Advanced Laparoscopic surgery. This unit is currently running a colorectal, breast, hernia, thyroid and hepatobiliary clinic with well-equipped endoscopy suite as well.

Promoted to Professor in 2016, Prof. Shahid has trained more than fifty candidates who have obtained FCPS General Surgery, he is an experienced teacher. He developed specialized clinics in breast, thyroid and colorectal surgery and these clinics have provided surgical treatment to great number of patients.

Prof. Shahid has also served as the clinical coordinator for College of Physicians and Surgeons and is one of the founding members of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia. He is a life member of the Pakistan Society of Surgeons and the Asia Pacific Hernia Society as well.

Furthermore, he has a number of publications to his credit. He has developed a Surgical Skills Lab and workshop for CPSP and is also founder of ATLS at CPSP. He has conducted numerous workshops in laparoscopic surgery and has organized workshops in laparoscopic surgery at JPMC. In addition to this, he organized workshops on Bariatric Surgery too.
